Dante Gabriel Rossetti (1828-1882) was an English port, illustrator, painter, and translate. Rossetti is credited as a founder of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. Among his works are The Daydream, Dante’s Dream, Astarte Syriaca, and Beata Beatrix. This painting, titled Astarte Syriaca (and also Venus Astarte), measured 74 inches by 43 inches. It was painted for Mr. Clarence Fry in 1877 and was first exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1883. The model for this painting was Mrs. William Morris, an English artists’ model.
