Tiger hunting in India, 19th century. European using a gun to shoot a tiger (Panthera tigris) while mounted on an Asian elephant (Elephas maximus). The skeleton of a cow is partly seen at bottom centre. The hunter depicted here is George Francklin Atkinson, a captain in the Bengal Engineers. Atkinson wrote, illustrated and published a history of the 1857 rebellion in India, as well as other works showing life in the area during British rule.
