Flares are used by military and some civilian aircraft as defensive decoys against heat-seeking missiles, which would otherwise home in on the heat produced by the aircraft's engines. Flare release can be triggered manually by the pilot or by automated electro-optical systems on board the aircraft which detect incoming missiles.
