Packets of salt in a convenience store in New York

Packets of salt in a convenience store in New York on Wednesday, April 2, 2014. A recent study by Copenhagen University Hospital in Denmark and published by the American Journal of Hypertension concludes that the Centers for Disease Control guidelines on the intake of salt are too low and may be harmful. The CDC recommends between 2645 and 4945 milligrams of salt for those under 50. Less than 1500 mg for the over 50 crowd. The study found low levels of salt may be linked to the risk of death. High amounts of salt are also injurious leading to high blood pressure and the risk of stroke leading experts to conclude that neither feast nor famine is good for you. (© Richard B. Levine)
