Bougainvillea flowers in a garden

Bougainvillea plants are native of South America, from Brazil to Peru and Argentina. The plant was classified during XVIIIth century by Philibert Commerçon, a French botanist, and explorer Louis Antoine de Bougainville. They woody vines growing anywhere scrambling over other plants with their hooked thorns. The flower of the plant is small and white but is surrounded by three or six bracts coloured in pink, magenta, purple or red, orange and yellow. Bougainvilleas are popular ornamental plants in most areas with warm climates.
