Close-up of a red lesion (known as a herald patch) on the skin of a patient with pityriasis rosea. This is a common infection, probably viral, with the herald patch preceding a generalised skin rash. The rash can cause substantial discomfort and itching. Treatment is typically with oral antihistamines or topical steroids to decrease the itching.
