Sailing Mite

The sailing mite, Excelsotarsonemus tupi, lives in the canopies of the tropical rainforest of Central and South America. It rides the wind between the trees, carrying fungi and bacteria. Its dorsal setae (hairs) are very broad, with intricate folding patterns. These sail-like setae might allow the mites to become airborne.
