Rotorua, New Zealand - 11 April 1984. This is what you see when you look down from a helicopter into Mount Tarawera's volcanic thermal vent. This massive scar in the mountain was caused by an explosive basaltic eruption in 1886. Taraweva overlooks lake Rotorua, itself a giant volcanic caldera. This, in turn, is one of several large volcanoes located in the still active Taupo Volcanic Zone on the North Island of New Zealand. The whole area is extremely active and, needless to say, Rotorua is famed for its hot springs, boiling mud pools, geysers and ongoing geothermal activity.
